We're not known for large, commercial farms. The facts are that our farms have always been small, and the owners worked hard to make a living. The hills are steep, and some of the soil is rocky. Along the Duck River and larger streams, the soil is very, very fertile. Some of our farms have been here for a long time--we have a number of "Century Farms" that have been in continuous operation in the same family for over 100 years. Most of them display signs noting their long history.
Farms in Hickman County are nestled among
the "hills and Hollers"(hollows=valleys) and shaded by a
canopy of big green trees. Along the Duck River
and larger streams, the fields are open enough to see
operating farms.
